01The real numbers
These are median 2026 installed prices for the Grand Rapids metro, aggregated from quotes our network contractors deliver and benchmarked against HomeAdvisor and Angi data for ZIP codes 49503–49546.
| Project | What’s included | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Tub-to-shower conversion | Remove tub, install acrylic walk-in shower with low-threshold base, slip-resistant floor, one set of walls | $6,500–$11,000 |
| Acrylic tub liner | Custom-molded liner installed over your current tub + 3-wall surround | $3,800–$6,500 |
| Full tub replacement | Remove old tub, install new alcove tub, surround, plumbing, faucet | $5,200–$9,000 |
| Walk-in shower (senior safety) | Zero-threshold entry, grab bars, built-in bench, slip-resistant floor | $8,500–$14,500 |
| Full bathroom remodel | Bath/shower + vanity + flooring + paint + fixtures (no layout change) | $14,000–$28,000 |
One-day install caveat. “One-day” pricing is legitimate for standard acrylic tub-to-shower swaps. If a contractor quotes one-day for a custom-tile walk-in or anything involving moving plumbing, walk away — that’s a one-day demo, not a one-day install.
02Five red flags when getting bath remodel quotes
The price drops $2,000+ if you “sign today.” Real contractors price the job, not the customer’s mood. A drop that big means the first number was inflated.
They won’t break out labor vs. materials on the quote. Every honest installer will itemize. “All-in” lump sums hide where the margin is.
“Lifetime warranty” with no written terms. Lifetime on what — the acrylic, the install, the caulk? Get the warranty in writing before you pay a deposit. Most “lifetime” warranties are on the acrylic only, which almost never fails anyway.
A deposit over 30% before any work begins. Michigan custom requires 10–30% for material order. More than that is a financing red flag — you’re funding their other jobs.
The “senior safety upgrade” is priced as an add-on at $3,000+. Grab bars and slip-resistant flooring add real cost in materials of maybe $400. Anything over that is margin padding.
03Five questions to ask every contractor before signing
- Who is doing the install — your crew or a subcontractor? If subbed, ask for the sub’s name and certifications. Plenty of one-day install companies use rotating subs you’ll never meet again.
- What’s the exact acrylic gauge? 1/8″ minimum. Anything thinner cracks within 5 years.
- Is the floor base structural or cosmetic? Structural bases (mortar-set) hold up. Drop-in cosmetic bases flex and crack at the drain.
- What happens if you cut into the wall and find rot or mold? The answer should be a written change-order process with a per-square-foot rate. “We’ll just handle it” means a surprise invoice.
- Can I see three local installs from the last 90 days? Not a slideshow — actual addresses or homeowner references in West Michigan. If they can’t produce three recent local jobs, they’re not the right fit.
04Senior safety: what you actually need
If you’re aging in place or remodeling for a parent, the must-haves — in order of fall-prevention value:
- Low or zero-threshold entry — eliminates the #1 cause of bathroom falls.
- Slip-resistant textured floor — not just a mat. Built into the base.
- Grab bars at the entry and seat — rated to 250 lbs minimum, anchored to studs.
- Built-in bench — mortared bench, not a portable seat that shifts.
- Handheld showerhead on a slide bar — allows seated bathing.
None of these should add more than $1,500 total to a standard tub-to-shower conversion. If they’re priced higher, you’re being upsold.
05Financing: the quiet cost
Many one-day bath companies push 0% financing for 12–24 months. Real numbers:
- 0% financing is real, but the contractor typically pays the financing company a 6–10% kickback — which is built into your quote.
- Ask: “What’s the cash price?” The answer should be 5–8% lower than the financed price.
- If they refuse to discount for cash, you’re paying for financing whether or not you use it.
Our full financing breakdown covers monthly payments at common project sizes, the four main lender paths, and the five questions to ask before signing any financing offer.
Bottom line. A fair 2026 Grand Rapids tub-to-shower conversion should land between $7,000 and $10,000 cash. A senior-safety walk-in should land between $9,000 and $13,500. If you’re quoted more than 20% above these ranges, get a second quote.
